Mehrnaz Fani

Mehrnaz Fani was an Industrial Postdoctoral Fellow at Vision and Image Processing Lab (VIP) – Systems Design Eng., University of Waterloo, Oct. 2018 – Sept. 2022. She received her Ph.D. in Electrical Eng. – Telecommunication Systems, from Shiraz University, Iran, in 2018. During her postdoc, she co-led a team of graduated students on the development of cutting-edge deep models for Hockey Video Analytics projects. This included collaboration with Stathletes Inc. on NHL data, and conducting research on homography estimation, players detection, tracking, 2D pose estimation, and action recognition from hockey videos. Mehrnaz, currently, works in industry and is focused on the research and development of advanced computer vision solutions for HD mapping for autonomous driving, from aerial images.

Postdoctoral Fellow Ph.D.

Amir has years of experience in machine learning, computer vision and has been a part of multiple interdisciplinary teams, including a research lab in Korea, a joint research project with Microsoft, and a collaboration with the Faculty of Health at the University of Waterloo. Amir is interested in video analysis and particularly long video object segmentation and continual/lifelong learning.

He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Sport Analytic Research Group, which is led by Prof. David Clausi.

He particularly enjoys working with scientists from various fields to develop new skills and face new challenges.

Based on Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) he is an INFJ-type type person.

Mohamed Naiel

Dr. Mohamed Naiel received the PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, in May 2017. He did part of his research in human action recognition in videos, object detection and multi-object tracking. Currently, he is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Systems Design Engineering Department, University of Waterloo, and Vision and Image Processing Lab, Waterloo, Canada. He did part of his research in several joint academic-industrial collaborative projects in the fields of Computer Vision, Image Processing and Machine Learning that involved many partners, such as Nile University, Concordia University, University of Waterloo, Microsoft’s Advanced Technology Lab in Cairo, MakerBloks Inc., Ville de Montreal, Christie Digital Systems, ATS Automation Inc, and Xiris Automation Inc. His research interests include signal, image and video processing, computer vision, machine learning and pattern recognition. Dr. Naiel is a recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Mitacs Accelerate Fellowship in 2015, and Concordia Full Tuition Recruitment Award in 2011. He has served as a reviewer for many journals and conferences, including, IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems (TITS) and IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS). He was the chair of the Industry Relations Committee of the IEEE Montreal Section from May 2016 to May 2018. During this role, he co-founded the IEEE Research Boost event in 2016.

Linlin Xu

I am a post-doc in Vision and Image Processing Lab, working with professors David Clausi, Alexander Wong, Fan Li, and Steven Leigh, on machine learning, intelligent remote sensing analytics and environmental monitoring.

I recieved my PhD degree in Geography in 2014 from Department of Geography and Environment Management, University of Waterloo. I achieved my Master in 2010 and Bachelor degrees in 2007, both in geomatics engineering, from China University of Geosciences (Beijing).

Research interests

My research interests lie broadly in the following aspects: (1) SAR, PolSAR data processing and the associated applications, particularly in ocean environment monitoring; (2) Hyperspectral and multispectral unmixing, classification, segmentation, feature extraction, and the associated applications; (3) Quantitative and computational methods in remote sensing and other geospatial application, spatial-multivariate data modeling and mining, quantitative remote sensing, image processing & computer vision, GIS, WebGIS; (4) GPS and InSAR data processing with the application in subside monitoring and DEM production; (5) Airborne, mobile, and terrestrial laser scanning mapping for land observation and 3D object modelling.

Yuan Fang is currently a postdoctoral fellow at VIP lab of the Department of systems design engineering. Yuhao Chen

Yuhao Chen was a postdoctoral fellow at the Vision and Image Processing Lab (VIP) in systems design engineering at university of Waterloo from 2020-2023. He obtained his B.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University in 2015 and 2019, respectively, while being a member of the Video and Image Processing (VIPER) laboratory. With a strong passion for exploring the cutting-edge technologies, Yuhao’s research has been focused on developing computer vision and artificial intelligence solutions for industrial applications, specifically in the fields of precision agriculture, precision health, and precision manufacturing.
