Amy Tai is a PhD student in the Vision and Image Processing Lab at the University of Waterloo. She is in the Computer Science program and supervised by Alexander Wong and Lukasz Golab. Her research focuses on the cancer domain with focus on medical imaging and computer vision. Previously, she completed her Master of Applied Sciences in the Systems Design Engineering program and her Bachelor of Applied Science in Management Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Outside of research, she enjoys playing squash, travelling, hiking, and swimming.

Amy’s research areas include medical image analysis, personalized nutrition intervention for the aging population, and improved rendering of 3D models. As a lead on the Cancer-Net initiatives, she is focused on providing open-sourced datasets and pre-trained models for the task of cancer diagnosis and prognosis, and nutritional intake estimation, respectively. In general, Amy is interested in medical research that leverages technological advancements to improve healthcare for all.

Max was a Master’s student in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Interested in imaging and remote sensing systems, computer vision, optics, electronic hardware design, and signal processing. Motivated by problems in climate science and medicine. His thesis was titled “Mixture Regression for Sea Ice Segmentation” where he introduced mixture regression as a general technique for unsupervised clustering on nonstationary datasets.

Mingzhe Jiang (Graduate Student Member, IEEE) received a B.Eng. degree in electronic information engineering and an M.Eng. degree in signal and information processing from the Hefei University of Technology, Hefei, China, in 2013 and 2016, respectively. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in systems design engineering at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada. Hey there, I’m Marjan Shahi! I’m currently a Ph.D. student in the VIP’s sports analytics group, focusing on machine vision and deep learning. My research is all about developing a methodology for analyzing hockey player performance based on their actions’ value.

One of my primary areas of interest is player action recognition. By using advanced computer vision techniques and machine learning algorithms, I aim to identify and analyze specific player actions on the ice. This could be used in player evaluation techniques as input to analyze their performance and provide coaches and teams with valuable insights into player performance, such as identifying areas for improvement or optimizing their game strategies.

I’m really excited about the work I’ve been doing on goalie pose estimation, too. We’re working on predicting goalie, net, and equipment poses with high accuracy, which will be super valuable for improving goalie action recognition and performance evaluation.

Another area of research I’m interested in, and I’ve worked on during my Master’s is reinforcement learning. I want to improve the generalization ability of RL agents so that they can adapt to new environments and situations more effectively.

Before starting my Ph.D., I worked in the industry doing business analytics for a great company. It was a fantastic experience, and it’s given me a unique perspective on the intersection of academia and industry.

Overall, I’m really passionate about using data and technology to drive our understanding of the world. I’m excited to keep making significant contributions to the field of sports analytics and beyond!

Hi! My name is Fernando J. Pena Cantu and I am a MASc student with the VIP Lab’s Remote Sensing Group. My current research focuses on investigating the relationship between textural features and the incidence angle in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery for sea ice classification. This topic has important implications for understanding the effects of SAR imaging parameters on sea ice detection and classification.

I am also involved in research on deep learning for sea ice segmentation and small object detection for whale surveying.

My research interests span a variety of topics in remote sensing, including synthetic aperture radar, textural features, deep learning, sea ice segmentation, domain adaptation, feature selection, and diffusion models. I am excited to continue exploring these areas and contributing to the advancement of remote sensing technologies.

Research interests

My research passions lie broadly in the realm of computer vision with a HCI/human factors twist. I am focusing my PhD thesis work on extracting hemodynamic information from videos. For my Master’s, I designed intuitive image features to help doctors make more accurate diagnoses of melanoma. Apart from medical image processing, I have also dappled with remote sensing (hyper- & multi-spectral) and photogrammetry (3D stereo vision). Wherever I find myself, I aim to devote my skills to create socially responsible technology to help make people’s lives more meaningful.
