She is in the Computer Science program and supervised by Alexander Wong and Lukasz Golab. Her research focuses on the cancer domain with focus on medical imaging and computer vision. Previously, she completed her Master of Applied Sciences in the Systems Design Engineering program and her Bachelor of Applied Science in Management Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Outside of research, she enjoys playing squash, travelling, hiking, and swimming.

My research passions lie broadly in the realm of computer vision with a HCI/human factors twist. I am focusing my PhD thesis work on extracting hemodynamic information from videos. For my Master’s, I designed intuitive image features to help doctors make more accurate diagnoses of melanoma. Apart from medical image processing, I have also dappled with remote sensing (hyper- & multi-spectral) and photogrammetry (3D stereo vision). Wherever I find myself, I aim to devote my skills to create socially responsible technology to help make people’s lives more meaningful.

His research focuses on deep learning for medical image analysis, particularly computer-assisted diagnosis and assessment of COVID-19, prostate cancer, and breast cancer. Currently, Hayden is a collaborator on the Cancer-Net initiative, which aims to provide datasets and pre-trained models for diagnosis and prognosis of prostate and breast cancers.

Hayden’s research focuses on medical image analysis, computational imaging, and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). In particular, his work as part of the COVID-Net initiative focuses on explainable COVID-19 diagnosis and severity prediction using CT images, as well as weakly-supervised COVID-19 infection segmentation. As part of the Cancer-Net initiative, he focuses on the development and application of synthetic correlated diffusion imaging (CDIs) for cancer detection and clinical decision support.

He was associated with PhotoMedicine Labs and the Vision and Image Processing (VIP) Lab, and was co-supervised by Dr. Parsin Haji Reza and Prof. Paul Fieguth. His main research contributions were in the areas of signal processing, multi-spectral unmixing, and chromophore-selective PARS® imaging with applications in PARS histology and ophthalmology. Nicholas was awarded the Alumni Gold Medal, which recognizes the top graduating master’s student across the whole university for their academic achievement.

Nicholas graduated from Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo in 2019 and completed his master’s degree with PhotoMedicine labs in 2022.

]]> Nicholas Pellegrino https://vip.uwaterloo.ca/n-pellegrino/ Mon, 24 Apr 2023 21:13:20 +0000 https://vip.uwaterloo.ca/?p=2434 Nicholas Pellegrino is a doctoral student in Systems Design Engineering, supervised by Prof. Paul Fieguth and associated with the Vision and Image Processing (VIP) Lab and the Statistical Image Processing (SIP) Lab. His main research focus is on machine vision, specifically object recognition. In support of the BIOSCAN program, associated with the International Barcode of Life project, Nicholas has undertaken the task of taxonomic order-level insect image classification. Broadly, this research will enable a far more extensive and detailed understanding of global biodiversity and the interactions between species and ecosystems.

During his master’s degree (also in Systems Design Engineering), Nicholas was associated with PhotoMedicine Labs, and was co-supervised by Dr. Parsin Haji Reza and Prof. Paul Fieguth. ]]> Andre Carrington https://vip.uwaterloo.ca/a-carrington/ Fri, 31 Mar 2023 17:45:37 +0000 https://wwwvip.uwaterloo.ca/?p=1438 My research applies artificial intelligence to prediction and pattern recognition in healthcare, with heterogeneous data consisting of numeric, categorical, image or waveform data.  I have a B.A.Sc. in Systems Design Engineering and an M.Math in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo.  I have given lectures at UW and at U of T’s School of Continuing Studies; and I helped develop and teach a worldwide course at IBM.

I have 18 years of IT leadership experience in industry.  Most recently I led IT strategy work for the University Health Network’s Multi Organ Transplant group in collaboration with UW; and I was the Director of Privacy & Security at Canada Health Infoway with oversight on federally funded Electronic Health Record projects in each province.  I have my own company, Bedrock Security Services Inc, whose clients included Canada Health Infoway, Telus, IBM and the Center for Internet Security; and I have also worked at Sobeys, Scotiabank, IBM and other organizations.
