]]> Jayden Hsiao https://vip.uwaterloo.ca/j-hsiao/ Tue, 25 Jun 2024 17:48:19 +0000 https://vip.uwaterloo.ca/?p=3909 Jayden is pursuing his MASc in Systems Design Engineering, co-supervised by Prof. David Clausi and Dr. Linlin Xu. He is interested in the semantic segmentation of sea ice using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and passive microwave (PM) data to improve Indigenous community safety, climate modelling, and ship navigation.

Jayden completed a BASc in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo in 2024. His research is generously funded by the Engineering Excellence Master’s Fellowship.

His research focuses on applying advanced machine learning methods to remote sensing images, with a particular interest in using Convolutional Neural Networks and Transformers to classify compact polarimetric SAR scenes for applications such as sea-ice classification, oil spill detection, and land cover type classification.

His research focus was towards remote sensing images. In his thesis, he developed methods to improve the image quality of the Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images over ocean regions. He also worked towards solving the problem of identifying beluga whale from aerial images. Currently he is pursuing a PhD studying robotics with Prof. Katja Mombaur and Prof. John Zelek.

I graduated with a Ph.D. in Systems Design Engineering in June 2021. In my research, I aspire to develop innovative image processing and signal processing methods that are applicable to SAR satellite images. Since 2021, I have been working in the industry on developing signal processing algorithms for raw SAR data and evaluating SAR image quality.

I am Muhammed Patel I am a graduate student pursuing a MaSc in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Prior to this, I completed a dual degree program in Industrial Engineering with a specialization in Optimization at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. I am currently working on automatic whale detection and sea ice classification from SAR images. I love to stay active through calisthenics, unwind with video games, or play sports. I’m always looking for new challenges and opportunities to grow both professionally and personally.
